墨西哥人最常讲的是西班牙语，但也有能说68种原住民语群（英语：Languages of Mexico）之一的人，以及其他近代移民来墨国之人或是从居住他国墨国侨民所学而说的语言。2015年的调查显示，21.5%的墨西哥人认为自己是原住民（英语：Indigenous peoples of Mexico）。[39][40][41]约有1200万名墨西哥公民旅居海外，其中1170万人旅居地是美国[42]。更广义的墨西哥人流散也可包含，祖先为墨西哥人且自我认同亦如此，但未必在公民身份、文化或语言上属墨西哥人的群体。美国拥有除墨国外最大的墨西哥人群体，2019年的人口为37,186,361人。[43]

现代的墨西哥自1810年历经10多年的独立战争后，于1821年自西班牙帝国独立，揭开民族认同的建立过程，墨西哥人融合了前哥伦布时期的原住民以及西班牙血统的文化特征。如此使得墨西哥人成为“一种独特的多种族民族主义（"a peculiar form of multi-ethnic nationalism"）”。[44]
