波爱修斯

中世紀哲學家

亚尼修·玛理乌斯·塞味利诺·波爱修斯拉丁语Anicius Manlius Severinus Boëthius;Boëthius 读作/bˈθi.əs/[1],也译作波伊提乌,480年—524或525年),六世纪早期哲学家。也是希腊罗马哲学最后一名哲学家,经院哲学第一位哲学家。[2]

波爱修斯出生于罗马一个古老的名门望族安尼修斯英语Anicia (gens)家族,这个家族曾出现过罗马皇帝佩特罗尼乌斯·马克西穆斯奥利布里乌斯以及多名罗马执政官[3][4]他的父亲Flavius Manlius Boethius日耳曼人奥多亚塞废黜了最后一位罗马皇帝罗慕路斯·奥古斯都之后,于487年成为执政官。波爱修斯本人也很早就步入政坛,在他25岁时已成为了元老院成员。[5]510年,波爱修斯在东哥德王国统治意大利时期成为执政官。522年,他的两个儿子也双双成为执政官。[6]

后来东哥德王国的统治者狄奥多里克大帝[7]怀疑他联络东罗马帝国谋反,将他囚禁在帕维亚,最终他被元老院判处死刑。

波爱修斯在监狱中写下了关于命运死亡形而上学伦理学问题的哲学巨著《哲学的慰藉》,这本书成为了中世纪最有影响力的哲学著作。

波爱修斯在罗马天主教中被奉列为圣人,他的纪念日位于10月23日。

塞味利诺·波爱修斯于480年生于罗马[8][4] ,出身贵族,年幼时父母双亡,由亲属西玛古英语Quintus Aurelius Memmius Symmachus抚养成人,并教导他学习希腊文文学哲学

著作 编辑

波爱修斯博学多才,在中世纪初期的学术界,享有崇高的荣誉,他将希腊哲学家亚里士多德柏拉图的作品翻译成拉丁文,同时将古代学者毕太古的音乐欧几里德几何学尼哥玛古数学(De institutione arithmetica libri duo)、托勒密天文学[9]阿基米德机械学,都翻译成拉丁文介绍给罗马人。波爱修斯自己也编写了许多关于伦理学、数学、几何学和音乐的书籍,他对神学尤有深邃的研究,著有神学书籍多种。

波爱修斯最有名的著作是《哲学的慰藉》。这本书最有可能是在他被流放和在监狱中等待处决时写成的。他的一生都在致力于保存古代的古典主义知识,尤其是哲学。[10]

这部著作代表了他本人和哲学的对话。[10]在书中哲学以哲学女神的形象出现。书中主张尽管这个存在明显的不平等,但是从柏拉图式的意义来说,这个世界上仍然存在一个更高的力量,其他的一切都要服从于这个崇高的“天道”(Providence)。[7]

这本书有几部手稿留存了下来,在欧洲,这些手稿在此后直到十五世纪甚至更晚的世纪曾被广泛地修改、翻译和印刷。[10]

音乐:《音乐的纲要》 编辑

音乐的纲要(英语:the fundamental of music)是波爱修斯早期的作品,并将音乐归为中世纪博雅教育(liberal arts)的四艺(quadrivium)之一。[11]

对波爱修斯而言,音乐是数字科学,数字的比例决定音程(interval)、谐和音程(consonances), 音阶(scales)及调音(tuning)。[11]

波爱修斯依据希腊哲学家尼科马库斯托勒密的第一本著作谐和论(harmonics),进行编纂。虽然后世不太清楚有多少内容承袭自其他作者,不过可以肯定的是内容的论述乃基于希腊的数学及音乐理论。[11]

波爱修斯将音乐分为三种类型[11]
1. musica mundane(the music of the universe):恒星、行星的运动,四季的变换以及自然环境(elements)与数值间的关系有关。
2. musica humana(human music):人的身体、心灵达到协调平衡。
3. musica instrumentalis(instrumental music):乐器或人声制造出听得见的声响。

波爱修斯强调音乐影响性格,故音乐的修习对年轻人来说很重要。音乐不能凭借直觉,是必须透过判断及推理的过程产生的。[11]
