分类学与命名 编辑
此属由英国自然学家威廉·约翰·斯温森于1827年建立。[4]其学名Campylopterus源自于德国博物学家约翰·弗里德里希·格梅林给予灰胸刀翅蜂鸟的种小名，其意义由两个希腊语单词组成：kampulos（意为“弯曲、弯折”）及-pteros（意为“有翼的”）。[5]:87
其英文俗称“Sabrewing”是指其外侧羽毛特化的扁平且厚实的轴。[6]
