古典玛雅语
古典玛雅语是目前发现证实的玛雅语系语言中，最为古老的一员，为记录于印地安时期，玛雅文明古典时期铭文所使用的语言。

语言的演变 编辑
从古典玛雅语至少分支出两种方言：乔尔方言和尤卡坦方言，此两者最后又分别演变为乔尔语和尤卡坦玛雅语。至今，现在的乔尔语及尤卡坦玛雅语使用者都还能辨识许多古典玛雅语的字汇。
书写系统 编辑
古典玛雅语以一种承自奥尔梅克文字的原始文字符号书写。古典玛雅文字符号使用的逻辑类似古埃及文，但它是一种音节文字，混杂大量的语标，构成许多动词及名词的字根。在文法上，古典玛雅文的字缀常以音节为单位构成。 玛雅人有一个被称为“人类头脑最光辉的产物”的“五进位数学体”，玛雅人（或他们的奥尔梅克祖先）独立发展了零（类似贝型的符号）的数字，它的发明与使用比亚非古文明中最早使用“零”的印度还要早一些，比欧洲人大约早了800年。碑文显示他们有时会用到亿。例如:在计时上，玛雅人有一个称为阿托盾的单位（相当于230亿4000万天，约6312万年），就相当于这样巨大的单位，只有在测量星际距离时才需要用到。
