砗磲亚科属于双壳纲,虽然有硬壳,但却是一种软体动物,大砗磲(Tridacna gigas)为其中最大者,本分类元过往曾经属于真瓣鳃目(Eulamelliranciiia),是砗磲总科之下唯一的一个科,但现在砗磲亚科是帘蛤目[1][2]鸟蛤科中的一个亚科[3]。本科物种绝大部分种类都是贝类,它们均拥有厚重的贝壳,生活在印度洋-太平洋海域温暖水域的珊瑚礁中,许多种类和甲藻类以及能进行光合作用的双鞭毛虫门物种(例如:虫黄藻)共生。
名称
编辑由于“砗磲”二字较为生僻,因此拥有大量俗名,在中国可以叫做阵渠、车蕖、水车贝、牛车贝,在台湾又叫做五爪贝(台湾话:ngóo-jiáu-puè)、五爪蚶(台湾话:ngóo-jiáu-ham)、hâu-pau-giô(台罗)。
“砗磲”一名始于西汉,因砗磲的贝壳表面有一道道厚重又放射状的沟槽,其状如古代车轮碾过的痕迹,故称车渠,后人因其坚硬如石,在车渠旁加上“石部”,从此成为专用字。

编辑本分类尽管已被降格多年,但仍被不少文献登记为“砗磲科”[4],但系统分类分析把本分类归纳为鸟蛤科之下的一个亚科[5][6]。本亚科只有两个属[3],而近期的基因证据表明这两个属是单系群的姊妹分类[7]。以下为这两个属及其下的物种:
保育状况
编辑本属所有种均被列为《濒危野生动植物种国际贸易公约》(CITES)附录二的物种,被限制出口及贸易。
