创立于1874年，当初的目的只是为了给州内的居民提供教育。[4] 该大学现主要提供工程和应用科学相关教育，[5] 该学院在2018年《美国新闻与世界报道》的全国大学排名中列在第75位。[6]

科罗拉多矿业学院于2018年秋季学期启动了世界上第一个太空资源研究生项目，提供硕士和博士学位[7]。
1921年，科罗拉多矿业学院购买了位于科罗拉多州爱达荷斯普林斯附近的埃德加矿场。实验矿井设有教室、火车和隧道网络[8]。
