1837年获得威廉四世的皇家宪章，因而冠上皇家头衔，称皇家伦敦英国建筑师协会（Royal Institute of British Architects in London），1892年去掉“伦敦”一词，1934年搬到现址。[3]皇家金奖和史特灵奖由该协会负责颁发。
