Calligra使用开放文件格式（ODF，OpenDocument Format）作为默认的文件格式，并能导入其他格式，如Microsoft Office的文件。Calligra依赖于KDE技术，并常与KDE Software Compilation相结合。

Calligra Suite的前身是KOffice，其开发开始于1997年[5]。在1998年加入KPresenter和KWord[6]。

1999年，在美国对微软反垄断审判中KOffice被举出作为证词，被当时的微软总裁Paul Maritz作为在操作系统和办公套装竞争的证据。[7]

KOffice套装的第一次正式发布是在2000年，作为KDE 2.0的一部分。[8]

2010年12月6日，KDE社区发布声明，成立Calligra Suite项目，作为KOffice项目的延续，并表示即将发布的KOffice 2.3仍将受到支持，而Calligra Suite的版本号将从2.4开始。

2010年12月31日，KOffice 2.3照常发布，其后修正错误的版本（2.3.1–2.3.3）。仍然是KOffice和Calligra开发团队合作努力的成果。它的开发者表示，此版本对实际用途有足够稳定度，而Karbon14、Krita和KSpread建议可用于生产工作。[9]

Calligra包括下列的应用程序：

  • Words，一个具有样式表和复杂版面的排版风格编辑器的文本编辑器，用于专业的标准文档。
  • Sheets（过去称为KSpread），强大的电子制表软件。支持多表格，模板和100多个数学公式。
  • Stage（过去称为KPresenter），全功能的幻灯演示程序。
  • Kexi，集成的数据库环境访问软件。designed as a Microsoft Access or FileMaker competitor. It has limited compatibility with the MS Access file format.
  • Flow（过去称为Kivio）, a programmable flowchart drawing program with dynamically loadable stencils. Developed by theKompany, which offers additional (non-free) stencils for sale.
  • Karbon14，矢量绘图程序。
  • Krita（过去称为Krayon和KImageshop），点阵图象处理程序。
  • Plan（过去称为KPlato），可以产生甘特图（Gantt）的项目管理软件。
  • Braindump，笔记程序。
  • Author，可以产生电子书的软件。

所有的包都是采用自由软件许可协议，并使用开放文件格式作为原生格式。

Calligra使用Flake和Pigment于应用程序上。KOffice的开发计划，以共享基础设施，尽可能在应用程序之间减少错误和改善用户体验。[78]自动化测试任务，并可以使用D-Bus或脚本语言，像Python、Ruby以及JavaScript增加自行定义功能。[79]
