Mackay she proved a marvelous assist-ance to her husband. It had long been a great grief to the mis-sionary that, while the men would come incrowds to his meetings, the poor women hadto be left at home. Sometimes in a congre-gation of two hundred there would be onlytwo or three women. Chinese custom madeit impossible for a man missionary to preachto the women. Only a few of the older onescame out. So the mothers of the little chil-dren did not hear about Jesus and so couldnot teach their little ones about him. But now everything was changed forthem. They had a lady-missionary, and oneof their own people too. The Mackays wenton a wedding-trip through the country. KaiBok-su walked, as usual, and his wife rodein a sedan-chair. The wedding-trip wasreally a missionary tour; for they visited allthe chapels, and the women came to themeetings in crowds, because they wanted tohear and see the lady who had married KaiBok-su. It blew Mrs. Mackayssedan-chair over and sent her and the car-riers flying into the mud by the roadside.At another place they all barely escapeddrowning when crossing a stream. But thebrave young pair went through it all daunt-lessly. The wife had caught something ofher husbands great spirit of sacrifice, andhe was always the man on fire, utterly for-getful of self.
