Windows 梦幻桌面是一个允许使用视频作为背景的公用程序[1]。梦幻桌面在正式发表前曾谣传会使用Motion Desktop和Borealis这两个名字[1][2]。
包含在梦幻桌面内的三维内容（如动态版的Windows Aurora背景图片）由Stardock Design制作，照片内容由探索频道提供[3][4]；亦可使用第三方MPEG或WMV格式的视频内容[5]。
梦幻桌面声称相比以往的动态桌面方式其中一个优势在于利用GPU来显示而不是CPU，让后者可以闲置来执行用户的工作[3]，怎样做到并未详细帮助。微软对梦幻桌面作品的指针为建议在资料压缩与文件大小间获取平衡；因为解压需要使用CPU，较大的文件会使用较多存储器以及会导致硬盘的访问[6]。
不论是否透过GPU来渲染使用视频作为背景会对笔记本电脑的电池寿命有显著的影响，所以当电脑使用电池时梦幻桌面可能会显示静态的背景[5]。该软件非常依重于Desktop Window Manager（Aero界面的一部分）。
DeskScapes 编辑
DeskScapes是一个允许梦幻桌面使用动态内容而非预渲染的影片的附加程序；DeskScapes会由Stardock以作为Object Desktop软件一部分的方式提供[3]。博客作家们推测可能会用作制作一个会对外部刺激作出回应，已由微软获取专利的"噪声" 桌面环境[4][7]。

有Windows Vista Ultimate的用户认为微软的Ultimate Extras发布过慢、内容过少，质疑微软是否信守增值服务的承诺[8]；另有用户发现，当升级到Vista SP1之后，操作系统内关于Ultimate Extras介绍部分的文字遭到删减，令人质疑这项计划的可信度[9]。
