斯托克顿和达灵顿铁路

斯托克顿和达灵顿铁路(英语:Stockton and Darlington Railway),简称S&DR,是1825年至1863年期间存在于东北英格兰的一家铁路公司运营有斯托克顿-达灵顿铁路。这家公司是世界上首家使用蒸汽机车的铁路公司。斯托克顿和达灵顿铁路参与了东海岸主线约克至达灵顿部分的建设。1863年,该公司被英国东北铁路收购。

斯托克顿-达灵顿铁路的轨距设计仍有争议,因为当时的文献均称该铁路为1422毫米,但考古上却是1435毫米。[a]这给今天标准轨距的起源打上了问号。

  1. ^ Smiles (1904,第160页) states that early tramroads had rails 4英尺8英寸(1.42米) apart, but Tomlinson (1915,第82–83页) challenges this, stating that the most common gauge of the early tramroads and waggonways was about 4英尺(1.2米), and some, such as the Wylam waggonway, had the rails 5英尺(1.5米) apart. The gauge of the S&DR was given in early documents as 4英尺8英寸(1.42米), but the distance between the rails was later measured as 4英尺812英寸(1,435 mm), and this became the standard gauge used by 60 per cent of railways worldwide. The difference of 12英寸(13毫米) is a mystery.[1][2]
