广告的名字来源于1989年浪漫喜剧片《当哈利碰上莎莉》[2]，讲述一个名为哈利的男性希望能与圣诞老人发展关系。有一年，哈利在圣诞老人送礼物时首次撞见他，两人的爱火越来越深厚。哈利最终写下“你是我最想要的圣诞礼物”的情书给圣诞老人，两人随后拥吻。圣诞老人接着请求挪威邮政替他在平安夜送礼物，好让他多花时间陪伴新男友哈利[3][4][5]。

广告一出马上在全球爆红，反应“大多正面”和引起共鸣[2][6][7]。加拿大议员蓝道尔·加里森和前美国驻丹麦大使鲁弗斯·吉福德称赞影片[8][9]。
然而，广告性化圣诞老人遭到英国评论家批评，例如通俗小报《每日星报》专栏作家达恩·尼森和评论员兼作家梅兰妮·布雷克[10]。英国作家兼学者凯蒂·爱德华兹在《独立报》写上述批评是基于反同理念和“男同性倾向恶名化”，即是两个男人亲吻是带有性的行为，但男女这样做就不是，因为这早已被社会视为常态[11]。匈牙利国民议会议长克韦尔·拉斯洛谴责广告亵渎圣诞节[12]。
