现在这个版本的简单西蒙出自1764年首版的一本畅销故事书。^[1] 简单西蒙这个角色曾出现在伊丽莎白时代的畅销书及一首1685年的民谣《简单西蒙的不幸与其妻马洁丽的残忍》（Simple Simon's Misfortunes and his Wife Margery's Cruelty）中。^[1] 另外也可能与18世纪的一名乞丐西蒙·埃迪有关。^[2]
