凯蒂·米歇尔（Katie Mitchell）是居住在密歇根肯特伍德（英语：Kentwood）的一位古怪而有抱负、热衷制作电影的少女。她经常与痴迷于自然和技术恐惧的父亲瑞克·米歇尔（Rick Mitchell）发生冲突；她的母亲琳达·米歇尔（Linda Mitchell）虽不理解凯蒂的兴趣，仍愿意支持她；唯一理解她的家庭成员，仅有热爱恐龙的弟弟亚伦·米歇尔（Aaron Mitchell）。凯蒂在近期被加利福尼亚州的电影学校（英语：Film school）录取，准备前往当地求学，但在她将要离家的前一夜，瑞克因为凯蒂在用餐期间展示她拍摄的一部短片、对凯蒂未来能否凭制片维生提出质疑而发生争执，不慎弄坏她的笔记型电脑，令琳达和亚伦非常担心两者的关系陷入紧张状态。为了防止这种情况发生，瑞克决定取消凯蒂的航班，转而带她、琳达、亚伦和家里的狗麻糬（Monchi）前往她的大学、进行一次越野公路旅行，作为最后的家族回忆。

同时间，科技企业家马克·包曼博士（Dr. Mark Bowman）宣称自己已开发出一系列全新的家用机器人，取代原有的高度人工智能PAL，招致了PAL的报复，PAL命令所有机器人在全世界猎捕人类并准备将他们放逐至太空。瑞克为了全家安全，决定让一家人躲在堪萨斯一家路边咖啡馆暂避危机，但是凯蒂选择说服瑞克协助拯救世界。父女俩行动期间打坏两台机器人艾瑞克（Eric）和戴博拉5000型（Deborahbot 5000），造成它们系统错误，凯蒂命令它们供出如何以终止代码关闭 PAL 和所有机器人，借此化解这次机器人危机。

一行人前往科罗拉多州东部某间购物中心，准备上传代码阻止危机，却遭安装PAL芯片的大量家电妨碍，凯蒂准备上传代码时，眼见一只巨大的菲比正追捕家人，只好转而和家人合作诱捕并击败菲比，但却不幸破坏了一台 PAL 的路由器，导致无法上传代码。一家人只好启程前往硅谷准备直接将代码输入至 PAL ，琳达透露她和瑞克数年前原本居住在山中小屋，而那是瑞克的毕生梦想，但后来瑞克顾及家庭责任，才会搬离山中小屋以方便小孩就学。米歇尔一家抵达硅谷后，伪装成机器人前往 PAL 实验室总部试图将其关闭，但是PAL以广播影像从中离间米歇尔一家，播放了凯蒂在咖啡馆偷偷告诉亚伦她只是假装对瑞克有信心的对话监控录像。目睹此事的瑞克伤心不已，造成米切尔一家不但未能闯入 PAL 的总部，连瑞克和琳达也都被 PAL 旗下更强大、更聪明的新型机器人俘虏。 PAL 对艾瑞克和戴博拉5000型进行再编码，好让它们重新服从她，凯蒂、亚伦、麻糬则逮到机会趁隙逃脱。

凯蒂在她的家庭摄影机里发现了瑞克在她童年时期的录影，意识到瑞克为了让她过上正常的生活，才出售了代表毕生梦想的山中小屋。与此同时，瑞克看见被囚禁在隔壁电子牢房的马克，正在观赏凯蒂制作的一段反映父女关系的影片，而且还笑得乐不可支，当马克告诉瑞克，自己很欣赏作者（凯蒂）的才华后，瑞克反思了他对待凯蒂的行为。凯蒂利用家用机器人无法分辨麻糬是何物种的弱点，驾车直驱实验室，造成大量机器人系统错误。瑞克和琳达获得马克的协助顺利脱困，并计划广播凯蒂所拍摄的麻糬影片，借此让所有机器人陷入短路状态，但瑞克上传视频时无法抵御为数众多的机器人，导致于凯蒂和亚伦被机器人掳走。面对 PAL 为何要拯救人类的问题，凯蒂表示尽管维持家庭关系并不容易，但仍值得为此努力，PAL 拒绝接受凯蒂的回复，将她从楼顶丢了下来。此时艾瑞克和戴博拉5000型受到瑞克的启发，恢复成再编码前的状态救了凯蒂并协助广播麻糬的影片。一家人联合起来对抗剩下的机器人。最后凯蒂将PAL从高空抛下，经由麻糬的帮助，令PAL坠入游泳池畔的一杯水里摧毁了她，解放了所有人类并让所有被控制的机器人停止运作。

事件落幕后，凯蒂和她的家人抵达她所就读的大学，与他们告别。艾瑞克和戴博拉5000型也成为米歇尔家庭的一分子。凯蒂与家人透过视讯对话交流近况，获知他们获颁国会荣誉奖章的喜讯。故事尾声，米歇尔一家为了领取国会荣誉奖章，偕同艾瑞克和戴博拉5000型展开了前往华盛顿特区的公路旅行。

2018年5月22日，索尼动画宣布菲尔·罗德与克里斯托弗·米勒正在制作一部名为《The Mitchells vs. the Machines》的动画电影。《神秘小镇大冒险》的前编剧迈克尔·里安达和杰夫·罗维将撰写剧本，而里安达将担任导演一职。2020年2月，宣布艾比·雅各森、丹尼·麦克布莱德、玛娅·鲁道夫、导演里安达、艾瑞克·安德烈和奥利维娅·科尔曼加盟配音阵容[3][4]，而片名改为《Connected》[5]。
