《维京传奇》取材于斯堪的纳维亚半岛维京人朗纳尔·洛德布罗克的事迹，他是最早的知名北欧海盗，劫掠过盎格鲁-撒克逊英格兰（现英国英格兰）和西法兰克王国（现法国）。本片将朗纳尔塑造为一个野心勃勃的维京农民，在其兄罗洛、妻子盾女拉葛莎和好友弗洛基的支持下，成为第一个率众向西航行的维京人，成功突袭英格兰，并最终成为斯堪的纳维亚国王。朗纳尔死后的最新季剧情描述他儿子们的命运，他们在英国、斯堪的纳维亚和地中海地区持续冒险。

2013年4月5日，历史频道宣布会有10集的第二季[2]，在2014年2月27日开播[3][4]。2014年3月25日，历史频道宣布该剧还会有十集的第三季[5]。2017年，宣布续订第六季，将有20集内容。

拉格纳对哈拉德森伯爵的警告充耳不闻,西行航向英格兰，并第一次成功袭击英格兰。

哈拉德森则筹谋著如何站道上风，结果攻击了拉格纳，拉格纳无法忽视兄弟所受的折磨，于是向哈拉德森单挑输赢。

最后拉格纳受命，为撒克森埃勒国王完成外交使命。

2014年3月25日，历史频道宣布维京传奇会有第三季[5] 。 当问及第三季对观众而言有什么期待之处时，迈克尔·赫斯特（英语：Michael Hirst (writer)）表示：“是的，我们正要去进攻巴黎。巴黎在当时是世上绝无仅有的大城市，有许多罗马的遗迹。我们现在在外景地正做布景，还会用到电脑成像。历史上拉格纳带着100艘船袭击巴黎。”[6]

许多角色都是基于历史资料或受其传奇故事启发的真实人物，所描绘的主要事件大部分也来自真实历史，包括维京人的兵器和导航工具。然而，实际上一百多年来的事件已经被剧组浓缩了，所以那些永远不可能见面的人物在剧中改编为相近的年龄，而历史事件细节也修改为具有戏剧性的效果。例如第一季中，朗纳尔·洛德布罗克和罗洛在793年渡海洗劫了林迪斯法恩修道院（真正的罗洛实际上还没出生，他的年纪应比“无骨人”伊瓦尔还小），但是在第三季，这群年龄相近的人物又参加了845年巴黎围困之战。此时，埃格伯特国王已经死了，阿佛烈大帝已经成为国王，但他在第四季仍然是一个孩子。在剧中，罗洛杀光他一起留驻在法兰西的追随者，并与他的同胞（维京人）反目作战，然而在历史上，罗洛成为诺曼底公爵后，仍继续与他的北欧亲属合作，他在法国的领地还成为维京人的航海中继点。此外，大部分主要角色被描绘为来自挪威，而根据主要的史料来源，他们很可能是丹麦人。
