前身为1953年成立的博伟发行公司（Buena Vista Distribution Company），华特迪士尼工作室电影部门负责发行、行销和宣传华特迪士尼影业集团旗下各公司制作的电影，包括华特迪士尼影业、华特迪士尼动画工作室、皮克斯动画工作室、卢卡斯影业、漫威影业、迪士尼自然、二十世纪影业和探照灯影业所制作的电影[3]。

部门自1986年起使用博伟电影发行（Buena Vista Pictures Distribution）做为名称[4]，直到2007年改名为“华特迪士尼工作室电影”并使用至今[3]。

在1953年以前，华特·迪士尼制作的电影是由哥伦比亚影业、联美和雷电华电影发行[3]。然而，在1953年一场关于迪士尼《True-Life Adventures》系列纪录片价值的争论事件后[来源请求]，让华特·迪士尼和洛伊·奥利弗·迪士尼决定自行成立“博伟电影发行公司”（Buena Vista Film Distribution Company, Inc.），负责在美国发行他们的电影作品[3]。博伟在1953年11月10日发行了第一部电影《沙漠奇观》（The Living Desert），该片是一部荣获奥斯卡金像奖的纪录片。与此同时博伟也首次发行了动画片《嘟嘟，嘘嘘，砰砰和咚咚》（Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom）[5]。博伟在之后陆续发行了数部电影，包括1956年9月的《杨贵妃》（Yang Kwei Fei）[6][7]、1958年3月的《密苏里旅人》（The Missouri Traveler）[5]，以及1959年7月的《渔人之家》（The Big Fisherman，首部由迪士尼出资的第三方制作电影）[5]。

1960年4月，博伟将“电影”（Film）一词从公司名称中拿掉[4]。1961年迪士尼成立了“博伟国际”（Buena Vista International，BVI）[8]，并在1979年1月发行了该公司第一部建议家长指导（PG）分级的电影《摔角比赛》（Take Down）[5]。1987年7月，博伟改名为“博伟影片发行公司”（Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, Inc.）[4]。

1996年8月，迪士尼与德间书店达成协议，迪士尼将负责吉卜力工作室动画电影的国际发行[9]。1996年9月，伴随迪士尼对Capital Cities/ABC的收购，博伟影片发行公司被并入该集团的母公司“ABC公司”（ABC, Inc.）[4][10]。

2002年，迪士尼和前锋动画（英语：Vanguard Animation）签订了四部动画电影的合约[11]，然而最后只有一部片获得发行[12]。

2007年4月，迪士尼宣布停止使用“博伟”作为品牌名称，“博伟电影发行”同月正式更名为“华特迪士尼工作室电影”（Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures），并于2007年11月上映的《魔法奇缘》中正式启用该名称。[3]

2019年3月，随着二十一世纪福克斯被迪士尼收购，二十世纪福克斯和福斯探照灯影业并入华特迪士尼影业集团旗下，但刚被收购时这两个制片部门仍被准许保留自己的发行部门[13]。2020年1月，迪士尼宣布去“福斯”化，二十世纪福克斯更名为二十世纪影业，福斯探照灯影业更名为探照灯影业。同年，迪士尼宣布将二十世纪影业的发行部门并入华特迪士尼工作室电影，而探照灯影业则被准许继续使用自己的发行部门[14] 。

2020年10月，为了统一迪士尼在院线与Disney+的发行业务，时任迪士尼CEO鲍勃·查佩克宣布将华特迪士尼工作室电影从华特迪士尼影业集团剥离，并并入新创立的迪士尼媒体和娱乐发行下属的迪士尼平台发行（英语：Disney Platform Distribution）中。随着转至迪士尼平台发行，探照灯影业的发行部门也正式并入华特迪士尼电影工作室[15]。然而在2022年11月随着罗伯特·艾格重新回归担任华特迪士尼公司CEO，该重组安排在2023年2月被撤销，同时随着迪士尼媒体和娱乐发行停止运营，华特迪士尼工作室电影也重新并入到华特迪士尼影业集团旗下。
