他在1970年代加入演员行列，80年代成为少女偶像。1990年凭《Drugstore Cowboy》赢得独立精神奖最佳男主角，2006年凭《撞车》赢得独立精神奖最佳男配角。

本名Matthew Raymond Dillon，父母为Union Camp销售经理及肖像画家Paul Dillon和主妇Mary Ellen。[1][2]狄龙在六兄弟姊妹中排第二，有一名姊妹及四名兄弟；弟弟凯文·狄龙[3]也是演员，在《明星伙伴》中演出，更因此获提名艾美奖及金球奖。
