此次自杀式炸弹攻击发生于当地时间晚上10点40分左右，地点在西喀布尔一处什叶派哈扎拉人聚居的婚宴会场[7][8]。自杀式炸弹袭击者在婚礼大厅的男人区[9]、靠近音乐家演奏的地方[10]引爆了身上的炸弹背心[11] 。当时有数百人在建筑物内举行婚礼[12]。

爆炸发生在婚礼仪式开始前不久。[10]根据婚礼大厅的主人的说法，共有超过1200人被邀请参加这次婚宴，其中包括什叶派和逊尼派的信徒[13]。大多数与会者都是哈扎拉人[4]。新娘和新郎都是什叶派[4]，且都来自工人阶级的家庭，其中新郎当时的工作为裁缝师[11]。他们的家人曾讨论如何安排婚礼的时间，以尽量减少袭击的风险[11]。

爆炸造成了至少63人死亡，182人受伤，其中有许多罹难者是儿童。新娘和新郎都在爆炸中存活下来，但其部分家庭成员则不幸罹难[14]。

发生爆炸案的隔天，伊斯兰国的当地分支机构承认此次犯案[15][16]。声明中还提到，在婚礼大厅内发生爆炸袭击后、救护车抵达时，他们又在会场外面引爆了一枚汽车炸弹[17]。后续的汽车爆炸事件尚未得到当局的确认[18]。

塔利班否认对此次袭击事件负责，并称“塔利班以最严厉的措辞谴责这次的爆炸事件”[19][14]。

阿富汗总统阿什拉夫·加尼·艾哈迈德扎伊谴责这次“不人道”和“野蛮”的袭击，并向受害者和遇难者家属表示哀悼[20][18]。他还提到，塔利班也不能完全逃避外界在这次袭击事件对其的指责，“塔利班无法免责，因为它们为恐怖分子提供了平台。”[21][22]

塔利班则否认了对这次袭击的责任，并对其进行谴责。发言人扎比乌拉·穆雅希德（英语：Zabiullah Mujahid）在一份声明中提到该组织“强烈谴责此次针对喀布尔市一家旅馆内平民的爆炸事件”，并同时补充，“对包括妇女和儿童在内的平民进行的野蛮、蓄意的攻击是被禁止的，也是毫无道理的。”[19]
