托马斯·科尔（1801年－1848年）[1]是位英裔美国画家，同时是哈德逊河派艺术运动的创始人[2]。科尔以浪漫主义风景画和历史画闻名，甚至被誉为首位重要的美国风景画画家。他的画风受到欧洲画家影响，但有着强烈的美式感受力[3]，画家十分多产，主要用油彩作画。他的画作通常都有寓意，而且经常在略带悲伤和浮想联翩的自然风景上描绘小型人像和建筑。它们时常将新世界描绘成自然的伊甸园，有逃避现实之意，这与画家从小生活在乌烟瘴气的城市景观（工业革命时期的英国）形成强烈对比[4][5]。他的作品很常批判当代对于工业化、都市主义和西向扩充运动的趋势，所以被视作保守[3]。

自学成才的科尔于1822年开始创作肖像画，随后几年才将注意力转移到风景画上[6]，而让画家作品普及的1825年展览中就有他的首批风景画《枯树湖》[7]。科尔早期画的山野作品都是“真实的美国森林”，他曾居住过的哈德逊河谷和卡茨基尔山是常驻背景[7][8]。1831至1832年间，科尔到访过意大利的名胜古迹部分出现在画作里，例如《罗马附近的渡槽》、《罗马坎帕尼亚》、《尼禄拱门》。科尔在罗马时为他最雄心壮志的作品（讲述文明兴衰的《帝国历程》系列）制定概念[9]，这5幅作品于1836年完成，反映了对田园主义的怀旧之情和画家对美国总统安德鲁·杰克逊的不满[3]。1836年的画作《河迹湖》涵盖他早年风景画的许多主题，将未开发的大自然和“开化”的土地同时呈现[10]。科尔晚年作品的关注点从自然景色到更多地传达宗教或精神主题[2]。1842年，他画了另一个譬喻式系列《生命之旅》来围绕身为人的生命历程。1847年，他根据同名希腊神话创作《被缚的普罗米修斯》，许多分析家认为其表达废奴主义者的观点[11]。《日落的十字架》在科尔撒手人寰时仍未完成[12]。
