金日成是朝鮮的開國領袖。 《朝鮮受控制的藝術》之作者簡·波特爾評價說：「這可能是金日成在其一生中擁有以他命名的建築物比歷史上任何其他領導人都多的情況」[1]。朝鮮聲稱「一百多個國家的480多條街道、機構和組織以金日成的名字命名」[2]。由於金日成的名「日成」（韓語：일성）可以解作「太陽」，許多以他命名的東西實際上都是這樣稱呼的[3]。
