歐洲經濟區與瑞士的身份證

除丹麥[3]和愛爾蘭[註 1]以外的絕大多數歐盟以及歐洲經濟區（EEA）的成員國均向其公民或國民簽發身份證以用作身份證明文件。由於自2021年8月2日起新的通用身份證模型將取代各國所使用的舊有格式，因而自此之後在歐洲經濟區所簽發的身份證將在格式上實現統一，而各國的舊版身份證目前正在根據 (EU) 2019/1157 法規逐步淘汰。

截至2021年，歐盟及歐洲經濟區內共有約2億張身份證投入使用，其中包括5300萬張新版歐盟標準身份證[5]。其中十五個國家將身份證制度定為強制性，11個國家為自願性，另外還有5個國家將其定為半強制性[註 2]。除此之外，一些成員國在強制性身份證制度之外還要求其公民隨身攜帶該卡，而另一些國家則僅要求保有身份證[6]。

註明歐洲經濟區成員國或瑞士公民身份[7]（第4條及第5條）[8][9]標記的身份證持有者可將其作為本國境內的身份證明文件，同時也可以將其作為國際旅行證件以行使其在歐洲經濟區和瑞士境內自由前途定居的權利。但未有明確註明歐洲經濟區成員國或瑞士公民身份的身份證，包括各成員國向非公民簽發的居留許可或居留卡，在歐洲經濟區和瑞士境內不具有旅行證件效力[10][11][12]。
