水牛步枪是指拥有大口径和单发黑火药筒的一把步枪，在19世纪末这把枪用于猎杀美洲野牛。野牛猎人通常会使用三种类型的步枪：夏普斯步枪、 斯普林菲尔德步枪和雷明顿一号步枪，雷明顿也被称为滚块步枪[1] 。而夏普斯步枪因为远距离再加上准确度而受到猎人的喜爱。[2]
