約翰·德范克

美国语言学家（1911－2009）

約翰·德范克（John DeFrancis，1911年8月31日—2009年1月2日），漢學家，語言學家，捐助教育者，美國夏威夷大學榮譽教授。

生平 編輯

  • 1911年出生於美國康乃狄克州Bridgeport一個貧困的家庭，父親是勞工，母親則為文盲。
  • 1933年春獲耶魯大學經濟學學士學位。
  • 1933年9月，在大蕭條的環境下，離美赴北京留學。
  • 1933年至1936年間，曾到遠東留學和從事研究，在中國、朝鮮、日本各地旅行。
  • 1935年離開北京，與訪華的軍事史學家Desmond Martin同伴，依照歷史記載成吉思汗的遠征路線，橫跨戈壁沙漠。在這次艱苦跋涉的旅途，他體驗到中國基層人民的生活。
  • 1936年在北京認識Katharine Wilson小姐。後來兩人結婚。
  • 1936年末返回到美國。
  • 1941年獲哥倫比亞大學碩士學位，1948年獲哥倫比亞大學博士（中、日文）學位。
  • 1947年至1954年，任薛頓賀爾大學中文研究教授。
  • 1950年至1955年，任《美國東方社會雜誌》（Journal of the American Oriental Society）副編輯。
  • 1964年至1966年曾任美國中國語言教師協會會長。
  • 1966年至1976年任夏威夷大學中文教授。
  • 1966年至1978年任《中國語言教師協會雜誌》（Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association）副編輯。

德范克生前為美國夏威夷大學榮譽中文教授。

學術 編輯

1960、70年代，德范克編寫了大量中文教材，耶魯大學出版社出版的一套12冊初、中、高級漢語教材。這套被稱「DeFrancis 系列」的課本成為了當時美國從事中國研究的學者的教材，是當時美國漢語教室最廣泛使用的資源。他早期編寫的部分中文口語教材顯得有點過時了，在他逝世之前，他仍和耶魯大學出版社編輯 John Montanaro 合作修訂新的 Beginning Chinese I and II. (《初級漢語讀本 I 和 II》)。德范克最著名的學術作品是《漢語：事實和幻想（英語：The Chinese Language: Fact and Fantasy）》，他在這本書中駁斥了一些關於漢語的普遍錯誤概念，同時也在多種問題上闡述了自己的理論。
