G.R.霍廷
傑拉德·R·霍廷(英語:Gerald R. Hawting,1944-)是一位英國歷史學者,主攻伊斯蘭學。
生平
編輯1978年,霍廷取得博士學位,伯納德·劉易斯與約翰·萬斯布魯是霍廷的導師。他曾任倫敦大學亞非學院近東、中東歷史教師,現已榮休[1]。
研究
編輯他的研究繼承導師約翰·萬斯布魯的路線,專注於研究伊斯蘭教誕生的宗教背景。他詳細研究了記載前伊斯蘭時期阿拉伯半島宗教情況的史料。他認為,伊斯蘭教並不像8-9世紀伊斯蘭著作中描寫的那樣,是從多神教的環境中發展起來的,而是在各種一神教相互鬥爭的基礎上發展起來的。
霍廷的另一個研究領域是在伊斯蘭教的發展過程中起了重要作用的倭馬亞王朝[2],另外他還有研究伊巴德派的著作[3][4][5]。他學術上屬於伊斯蘭研究的懷疑派。
