亚美尼亚王国自公元前66/65年时成为罗马的保护国。114年，图拉真将亚美尼亚纳为罗马尼亚的行省。但图拉真的后继者哈德良决定废除亚美尼亚行省，亚美尼亚重新成为罗马帝国的保护国。此后亚美尼亚帝国长期是罗马和安息帝国及萨珊帝国反复争夺的地区。1世纪后，亚美尼亚开始基督教化。亚美尼亚王国是世界第一个将基督教定为国教的国家。
