这一名字起初源自希伯来语词“ מַתִּתְיָהוּ”（Matityahu），意为“来自雅威（耶和华）的礼物”。“ מַתִּתְיָהוּ”先是经希腊化为“ατταθίας”（Mattathias），后来先又逐步简化为“Ματθαῖος”（Matthaios）。“Ματθαῖος”后来又被拉丁化为Matthaeus，最后演化成英语人名“Matthew”[3][4]。
