据新南威尔士警方表示，嫌疑人首次进入悉尼西田邦代汇购物中心的时间约为澳大利亚东部标准时间下午三时十分。[1]据称他曾离开购物中心并在十分钟后持刀返回。[2][3]嫌疑人在下午三时二十分回到购物中心后开始持刀伤人。[4]凶手行凶时有意避开男性，并且故意针对女性。[5]据报导，新南威尔士警方在下午4时前不久接到多人被刺伤的报告后赶到现场。[2][6]该建筑物随即被疏散，[3]周边区域的公共交通线路被临时调整。[7]

据报导，一名女督察艾米·斯科特（Amy Scott）在建筑物的五楼与嫌疑人对峙时向其胸部射击，并在嫌疑人倒地后立即对其进行心肺复苏。[4][8][9][10][11]

凶手是一名来自昆士兰州图文巴的40岁男子，名叫乔尔·考奇（Joel Cauchi）。他于2024年3月来到悉尼。[12]

凶手没有工作，单身，也没有子女[12]。凶手17岁时被诊断出患有一定程度的精神疾病[16]。随着年龄增长，凶手的心理健康状况越来越差。[12]

澳大利亚总理安东尼·阿尔巴尼斯称事件是“恐怖的暴力行为”；他表示自己已听取事件的简报，同时向受害者及应急人员表示慰问[17][18]。他又赞扬击毙凶手的女警艾米是“英雄”，同时指示有关方面延长仗义出手的法国建筑工人达米安的护照，诚挚邀请达米安成为澳大利亚公民[19]。美国总统乔·拜登、英国首相里希·苏纳克、新西兰总理克里斯托弗·拉克森表示了慰问[10]。澳大利亚君主查尔斯三世和卡米拉王后[20]、威尔士亲王威廉及王妃凯瑟琳[21]以及教宗方济各也表达慰问[22]。
