ENQUIRE

ENQUIRE又称询问计划，是由欧洲核子研究中心的蒂姆·伯纳斯-李于1980年编写的一个软件计划[2]，它是万维网的前身[2][3][4]。它是一个简单的超文字程序[4]，与万维网和语义网有一些相似的概念，但在几个重要部分有所差异。根据伯纳斯-李的说法，这个名字的灵感源自于一本古老的书籍“探询一切事物（英语：Enquire Within Upon Everything）”[2][3][5]。

1980年左右，约有一万人在欧洲核子研究中心工作，提供不同的硬件、软件和个人需求。利用电子邮件和文件交换完成大量工作[4]。科学家们需要追踪实验室非常多的项目[3]，项目之间彼此互相关系[2]。伯纳斯-李从1980年6月23日起在CERN工作六个月，这段期间他开发了ENQUIRE[6]。建立一个不同网络、磁盘格式、数据格式和字符编码方案兼容的新系统，这使得在不同系统之间传输信息的任何尝试都是一项艰巨且不切实际的任务[7]。ENQUIRE之前的不同超文本系统没有达到这些需求，即Memex和NLS。
