1908年由 George Parmly Day 创建，[3] 在1961年成为耶鲁大学的官方部门，但财政和运作自主。
截至2009年，耶鲁大学出版社每年出版约300本精装本新书和150本平装本新书，出版书籍超过6000本。其出版的书已荣获五次国家图书奖，两次国家书评奖，八次普利策奖。[4]
