電影入選第79屆威尼斯影展主競賽單元，2022年9月3日舉行首映禮[1]，最終獲得國際影評人協會大獎[11]。而作為一部由阿根廷、英國及美國三國合拍的電影，電影代表阿根廷參與第37屆戈雅獎（英語：37th Goya Awards）最佳伊比利亞美洲電影（英語：Goya Award for Best Ibero-American Film）的角逐。此外，電影還獲得第95屆奧斯卡金像獎最佳國際影片獎提名[12][13][14]，入選美國國家評論協會的年度五佳外語片[15]，拿下第80屆金球獎的最佳外語片[16]。

1985年，阿根廷軍政府倒台第二年，阿根廷逐漸走向民主化。彼時軍政府被控危害人類罪，但軍事法庭拒絕審理案件，轉由民事法庭接手，政府派公訴人胡里奧·塞薩爾·斯特拉塞拉（英語：Julio César Strassera）處理案件。就在軍政府決意派出經驗老到的律師團體應訴的時候，斯特拉塞拉組建起訴團隊的工作陷入困難，立場趨向保守的法律界不願接手。後來政府委派路易斯·莫雷諾·奧坎波（英語：Luis Moreno Ocampo）擔任副檢察官，斯特拉塞拉前去見面，結果發現奧坎坡的家人與軍方關係密切，是軍方的堅定追隨者，於是開始抗拒奧坎坡的協助。與此同時，斯特拉塞拉接連收到死亡威脅，政府不得不給他一家安排保護。考慮到資深律師紛紛擔心接手這樁頗具爭議的案件會影響個人聲譽，斯特拉塞拉最終接受了奧坎波的幫助，奧坎坡利用教授身份在大學內尋找初出茅廬的法學畢業生和新人律師。

經過一番波折，斯特拉塞拉與奧坎波終於組建了一支年輕的律師團隊，其中不少人在政府部門工作，可以利用職務之便搜集起訴材料。由於軍政府在阿根廷全國各地犯下滔天暴行，斯特拉塞拉一行人拿出地圖，標記各地的軍政府監獄，計劃前往當地採訪受害者，從他們的口中拿到證詞。然而一行人經常被不明身份的人士跟蹤，安全受到極大的威脅。另一方面，奧坎波的家人轉變立場，全力支持奧坎波審判軍政府。開庭第一天，法庭就受到炸彈威脅，斯特拉塞拉認為這是軍政府的支持者使詐，目的是要推遲審判。他說服法官頂住壓力，如期進行審判。審判過程由攝影機全程錄像，部分畫面在全世界轉播。受害人紛紛講出自己或家人被軍政府殘酷虐待的經歷。阿根廷總統勞爾·阿方辛召見斯特拉塞拉，說他在密切關注着法庭的情況的時候，內心也被證人的經歷深深打動。後來檢察總長出面和斯特拉塞拉交涉，希望斯特拉塞拉能對空軍手下留情。斯特拉塞拉非常生氣，直接在法庭上對着空軍的幾位將軍做出粗俗的手勢，說要以這種藐視法庭的行為被趕出法庭。

在寫結案陳詞的時候，斯特拉塞拉認為這個案件不僅要由法庭上的法庭來審判，還應該讓阿根廷人民和全世界來判決。在家人的幫助下，斯特拉塞拉寫出一份頗具氣勢的結案陳詞：「我希望在起訴的末尾聲明放棄原創權利，而改用一個不是我自己說的詞，而這個詞是屬於全體阿根廷人民的。法官閣下，¡Nunca más!（再也不會有了！）」。庭審結束後，法官進行閉門審議。斯特拉塞拉的兒子在餐廳里監視法官的一舉一動，發現他們似乎達成了某種協議，後來證明這份協議是說法官同意起訴軍政府的罪行。突然，斯特拉塞拉收到一位朋友病危的噩耗，連忙趕到醫院見面。朋友催促他快點拿到最終的審判結果，不然自己就死掉，再也不能告訴大家了。斯特拉塞拉騙他將軍們都被判終身監禁，包括空軍在內。最終法庭判處陸軍上將豪爾赫·拉斐爾·魏地拉和海軍上將埃米利奧·馬塞拉（英語：Emilio Massera）終身監禁，羅伯托·愛德華多·比奧拉17年監禁，海軍上將阿曼多·蘭布魯斯基尼（英語：Armando Lambruschini）8年監禁，陸軍上將奧蘭多·奧古斯蒂（英語：Orlando Ramón Agosti）4年半監禁。影片末尾出現了斯特拉塞拉團隊的照片，以及審判的一些錄像畫面。
