在一次采访中，组合成员安德鲁·塔加特透露，他最开始在乘机时创作了歌曲的高潮部分。之后，受到the xx和天空爆炸的启发，组合用芬达电吉他和软件插件往歌曲里加了一些“大的、回响的吉他音”。埃米莉·沃伦（英语：Emily Warren (songwriter)）和斯科特·哈里斯（英语：Scott Harris (songwriter)）与组合一起创作了歌曲的旋律和歌词。[4]人声部分，歌曲原本想要给蕾哈娜演唱，但她的团队回绝了这首歌。[5]

当塔加特听到黛雅的《Hide Away（英语：Hide Away (Daya song)）》之后，组合正式敲定了歌曲人声部分演唱者的人选，并请黛雅去录音室录制人声部分。[4]歌曲最初创作时音阶较低，但为了适应黛雅的音域，组合将其调高了一些。歌曲的第3高潮段的萨克斯伴奏亦是后来才加上的。[4]最终，歌曲以通常音符两倍时间80拍每分钟的速度创作完成，其音调为升G小调。歌曲的和弦进程为E–B–F♯–G♯m，黛雅在歌曲的音域介于G♯3和C♯5之间。[6]

在美国，《别让我失望》在2016年2月27日那周空降《公告牌》百强单曲榜第85名，但在次周出榜。同年3月12日那周，歌曲重新进榜，取得第81名。7月16日，歌曲取得了其最高排位第3名。《别让我失望》总计在榜单前10停留了23周，被《公告牌》评为当年榜单表现第8好的歌曲。[12]在英国，歌曲则最高取得了单曲榜亚军。[13]

歌曲的音乐视频于2016年4月29日上载至YouTube。[14]在录像带中，组合二人日出时在一个树木覆盖的山路上开着一辆黄色敞篷车。开车的画面插入了黛雅的镜头，黛雅身穿黑色皮裤和夹克，在一片雾气濛濛的灌木林中唱歌。在黛雅和一群环绕在她身边穿着与其相似的舞者堵住山路时，组合停下了车。黛雅和舞者们跳着舞，而组合在车上看着她们。节拍渐进，车子跟着节拍摇晃，愈摇愈烈。在歌曲快结束时，摇晃的车子将组合甩出了车子，二人悬浮在空中。

2016年9月5日，亚瑟小子在BBC广播一台节目《Live Lounge（英语：Live Lounge）》上翻唱了《别让我失望》。[15]
