步行,是有腿动物进行动物运动的主要步态英语Gait之一,通常比跑步和其他步态慢。步行被定义为一种“倒单摆”的步态。在这种步态中,每走一步上身体都要拱起脚才能前进。步行不分肢的数量,即使是有超过一对足的节肢动物也可以步行。[1]人类的步行有时也定义为随时保持一只脚在地上的移动方式,若两脚同时离地则称为跑步或跳跃

一只行走的仓鼠

根据理论,四足动物之间的“行走”源于水下。例如猬鳐Leucoraja erinacea),是底层区鱼类群落的一员,可以用它们的腹鳍以推离海底。早在4.2亿年前,它们就进化出特有的神经机制以推动自己前进,这比脊椎动物踏上陆地要早[2][3]。呼吸空气的鱼类在水下用鳍“行走”,随后产生像提塔利克鱼属这样可以上陆的脊椎动物[4],之后再进化出生活在陆地上靠四肢行走的生物[5]。陆生四足动物理论上只有一个起源,四肢演化自鱼鳍,而节肢动物和它们的近亲,特别是在昆虫、多足纲动物、螯虾、缓步动物、甲状旁腺动物和甲壳类动物,已被认为曾多次独立进化了行走[6]

鸟类、大穿山甲、人类、以及一些肉食性恐龙独立演化出二足步行英语bipedalism,有些蜥蜴在高速跑步时也只用二足,袋鼠跳鼠用二足跳跃移动。目前认为人类的二足步行始于约400万年前的南猿。从肯尼亚古海岸发现的脚印来看,人们认为在150万年前现代人类的祖先很可能以与现在非常相似的方式行走[7][8]

人类通过“双摆”的策略而完成步行。在向前运动期间,腿离开地面从臀部向前摆动,这是第一次摆动。之后腿部随脚跟撞击地面,并以“倒单摆”的动作滚动到脚趾,这是第二次摆动。[9]由于两条腿的运动协调一致,因此一只脚或另一只脚始终与地面接触。通过利用锺摆力和地面反作用力,步行过程中可节省约40%的能量。[10]

对人类而言,大多数婴儿在九到十六个月间开始学走[11],而平均老年人步行的速度是3.2 km/h ~ 3.9 km/h,年轻人则为3.75 km/h ~ 5.43 km/h[12][13]

马的步态英语Horse gait为四拍式步态,平均每小时行约6.4公里。步行时,马的腿以“左后腿-左前腿-右后腿-右前腿”的顺序、以规则的1-2-3-4节拍运动。步行时,除非将重量从一只脚转移到另一只脚,马总是将一只脚抬起,另一只脚放在地上。的头部和颈部略微上下运动,以协助保持平衡。[14]

大象可以前后移动,但不能小跑、跳跃或飞奔。在陆地上行走时,它们只使用两种步态:步行和类似于跑步的更快步态。[15]大象步行时,腿像摆锤一样;象脚放在地上时,臀部和肩部会上升或下降。[16]快速移动的大象似乎用前腿“跑”,但用后腿“行走”。尽管大象快速移动时的姿态很像其他奔跑的动物,由于没有“空中端段”,大象仍为步行状态。大象快速移动时可达约18公里/小时的最高速度。[17]

如可以持久的每周五天、每天走路三十至六十分钟,再加上正确的姿势走路的话,身体会更健康[19][20]。定期步行可以提高自信耐力精力减肥能力和预期寿命,并减轻精神压力。[21][22][23]亦有研究表明步行可以降低发作冠心病中风糖尿病高血压肠癌骨质疏松症的风险。[24]有研究表明,步行除了具有身体上的益处外亦对大脑有益,可以提高记忆力学习能力,专注力和抽象推理程度[25][26]。长期步行的人癌症心脏病的机会可稍微降低,而寿命也会有所增加。步行还会令骨骼更加健康,特别是胯骨,另外还可降低低密度脂蛋白,并增加高密度脂蛋白[27]
