美国的大多数的州份及领地都有自己的格言，包括华盛顿哥伦比亚特区和3个美国领地。各州的格言有时可以在各州的州徽或州旗上找到。其中个别的州份通过在州议会立法，正式指定了该州的格言，而其他州份的格言只作为其州徽的一个元素。美国本身的格言是“我们信仰上帝”（In God We Trust），由美国国会通过，并由总统德怀特·大卫·艾森豪威尔于1956年7月30日签署成为法律。[1]格言“合众为一”（E Pluribus Unum）虽然于1782年批准用于美国国徽，但从未通过立法确立为国家格言。

南卡罗来纳州的两个格言均为拉丁文。[2]肯塔基州、北达科他州以及佛蒙特州也有两个格言，一个拉丁文，另一个是英文。[3][4]除关岛和北马里亚纳群岛没有任何格言外，所有州份及领地都有至少一个格言。[5]英语和拉丁语是各州格言使用最多的语言，有25个州份及领地分别使用。7个州份及领地使用另一种语言，其中每种语言只使用一次。有8个州份和2领地在其州徽上印有其格言；有38个州份和4个领地在其州徽上印有其格言。

以下列表所使用的“日期”是该格言在官方上使用的最早日期。由于有些州份没有通过立法的方式规定该州的格言，但是却又在州徽上使用，在这种情况下，列表钟的日期为州徽采用的日期。目前最早使用的格言是波多黎各的“以约翰为名”（Joannes est nomen ejus），由西班牙人在1511年授予该岛。[6]
