1912年在西点军校

阿诺德于1889年2月24日出生于康涅狄格州科林斯维尔，他就读于西点军校，并是该校的全美橄榄球运动员（英语：College Football All-America Team）。1912年6月从西点军校毕业后，阿诺德被任命加入美国陆军步兵部队（英语：Infantry Branch (United States)）[2]。

第二次世界大战 编辑

第一次世界大战服役后，1928年至1930年就读于美国陆军指挥参谋学院[3]。

二战初期，阿诺德任第一军参谋长兼第69野战炮兵旅和第44师旅长[2]。

阿诺德在阿留申群岛战役担任第七步兵师二师长。阿诺德继续担任第七军团的二把手直到1944年[2] 。

阿诺德在菲律宾战役和冲绳岛战役担任第七师的指挥官。他因二战服役而获得陆军杰出服役勋章[4]。

战后阿诺德于1945年至1946年间担任朝鲜军政长官[2]。曾担任1946年1月在韩国首尔召开的美苏联合委员会的美国首席代表，随后又担任美国的首席代表。随后于1946年4月成立了苏联联合委员会。联合委员会的首要任务是在1945年被国家战争海军协调委员会（SWNCC）分裂后重新统一朝鲜和韩国。阿诺德于1948年从陆军退役[2]。
