历史

1818年美国国会批准刚成立的亚拉巴马领地建立一座大学城，1819年亚拉巴马领地升格为亚拉巴马州之后又增拨了土地。亚拉巴马州议会在1820年12月18日正式成立“The University of the State of Alabama”（亚拉巴马州大学），此即亚拉巴马大学前身[3]。校董会将校址选在塔斯卡卢萨（当时州府候选之一）郊区[4]，建筑设计师为威廉·尼古拉斯。尼古拉斯的设计灵感源自弗吉尼亚大学，整个校区以一座圆形建筑为中心[5]。该大学在1831年4月18日开学。[6]
