魯賓和女友小露成立了重金屬二人組「黑色雙陸棋」（Blackgammon），魯賓是鼓手，小露是主唱。兩人開着露營車到全美各地演出，平時就住在車裏。一次，魯賓突然喪失聽力，到藥房尋求診治。藥師將他轉介給醫生，醫生檢查完他的聽力，發現他只能說出聽到的20-30%的詞彙，且病情會急劇惡化。醫生建議他植入人工耳蝸，但耳蝸的花銷過高，保險無法報銷。醫生建議魯賓不要去聽吵雜的聲音，日後再來接受進一步的診斷，但魯賓仍堅持表演。

小露為了魯賓的安全着想，不讓他表演，但魯賓不聽勸阻。另一方面，小露也擔心魯賓的精神狀況，因為他正在戒毒。最終，兩人聯繫了地下毒品銷售商赫克托，赫克托給魯賓找了一家為失聰者設立的鄉下庇護所，這個庇護所由正在戒酒的喬設立，他在越南戰爭期間失去聽力。不過，對方不讓小露過去，小露只好和他分開，但他感到非常難受，說自己寧可戴人工耳蝸，也不願呆在庇護所。小露擔心他的健康，勸說他回到庇護所，之後充滿不忍的離去。

魯賓在見面會上結識住在庇護所的其他人，魯本剛開始十分煩躁不安，喬讓魯賓在靜修室安靜地坐下來，學會適應安靜的環境，要是開始毛躁難耐的話，可以一刻不停地寫東西宣洩情緒，同時自己也會陪他做同樣的事情。魯賓另外結識了手語老師黛安和她的學生，在他們的幫助下，他開始學習美國手語。魯賓來到黛安的課堂上，開始接觸孩子們及其他人，新生活就此安頓下來。他給孩子們和黛安教打鼓的基本技巧。

迄今為止，魯賓在庇護所的生活都是由教會資助。喬建議他當庇護所的員工，這樣一來就可以幫助其他失聰者，建議他考慮一下。魯賓時不時用電腦查看小露的動態，發現她正在巴黎表演音樂。他又聯繫庇護所的朋友珍納，讓她賣掉他的鼓和其他樂器，還有他的露營車，拿錢做人工耳蝸手術。在等待人工耳蝸激活的時候，魯賓又讓喬借錢給他，讓他贖回休旅車。喬拒絕了，認為魯賓的模樣像是毒癮犯了，詢問魯本可曾在靜修時有找到一絲平靜過。喬傷心地祝福魯本的選擇，讓魯賓離開，一來是這個社區成立的宗旨本來就不認為失聰是身心障礙，不認同使用人工耳蝸，二來是不希望魯本的選擇影響到其他居民的生活信條。

耳蝸激活後，魯賓恢復了部分聽力，但也聽到了一些惱人的失真。魯賓飛去比利時，去小露有錢父親李察的家中見她，小露正在父親家展開新生活。李察歡迎魯賓前來，允許他住下來。李察向魯賓坦承自己以前不怎麼喜歡他，但現在明白這不是魯本的錯，相信他能夠給小露帶來幸福。在會面中，小露和父親演奏了一曲二重奏，只不過魯賓的耳蝸無法讓他完全享受這個表演。稍晚魯賓在與小露溫存時，問小露以後還能不能像以前一起玩音樂，一起巡演，但這個問題讓小露面露難色，魯賓安慰她，說她非常優秀，是她拯救了他的人生，小露說他也拯救了她的人生。第二天早上，魯賓醒來，趁小露還在睡覺時不道而別。隨着街上的鐘聲響起，這時惱人的失真再度出現，他在戶外找地方坐下來，摘下人工耳蝸，享受着內心的平靜。

影片最初是德里克·錢弗朗西（英語：Derek Cianfrance）未完成的計劃《金屬頭》（Metalhead），講述一位因耳膜破裂而喪失聽力的金屬樂鼓手。樂隊朱西弗（英語：Jucifer）的成員在片中本色出演。然而項目後來擱置，直到他的好友達柳斯·馬德（英語：Darius Marder）接受[7]。2016年1月，消息指狄高達·莊遜和馬提亞斯·修奈爾加盟劇組，馬德擔任導演[8]。2018年7月，消息指列斯·艾文、奧莉花·高姬加入劇組，取代約翰遜和修奈爾，馬蒂爾·艾馬力同期加入[9]。選角前，馬德花了13年的時間物色演員，希望演員能兌現他的影片的承諾[10]。

演員多來自失聰者群體。艾文為影片花了八個月的時間來準備，每天花兩個小時學習美國手語，兩個小時學打鼓，兩個小時上私教課，剩餘時間與教練學表演[10][11]。馬德希望艾文「相信他的直覺」，不讓他看表演的毛片或劇本解析[10]。

影片於2018年春季、夏季和秋季連續拍了24天[12]。由於預算有限，每個鏡頭馬德只拍兩遍[13]。取景地包括大波士頓地區，主要是在伊普斯維奇（英語：Ipswich, Massachusetts），其他鏡頭則在波士頓、林恩、劍橋、丹佛斯、弗雷明翰、羅倫士、莫爾登、羅利、托普斯菲爾德[14][15]，以及比利時安特衛普取景[12]。

影片於2019年9月6日在2019年多倫多國際影展平台獎（英語：Platform Prize）計劃全球首映[16]，其後在蘇黎世電影節（英語：Zurich Film Festival）及鹿特丹影展放映[17]。首映禮結束的第二個禮拜，亞馬遜影業購下影片美國發行權[18]，原計劃於2020年8月14日上映[1]，後來受2019冠狀病毒病疫情影響推遲到2020年11月20日上映，12月4日登陸旗下流媒體平台Prime Video[19]。影片還被標準收藏收錄，預計於2022年發行藍光光碟和DVD[20]。

匯總媒體爛番茄根據230條評論，給影片打出97%的新鮮度，平均得分8.2/10。網站共識寫道：「《金屬之聲》在列斯·艾文熱情表演的加持，展示了失聰人群體的經歷，使觀眾產生美好想像[21]。」Metacritic根據31條評論打出82/100的平均分，表示「普遍好評」[22]。
