德雷在2020年9月与《访问》杂志的采访中表示，“专辑的很大一部分”都跟她“迷人的女性朋友”和“美丽的弟弟妹妹”有关。[16][17]音乐杂志《Mojo（英语：Mojo (magazine)）》2021年4月刊中，一则在2021年2月与德雷进行的采访表示“2021年，（《乡村俱乐部上的飞机云》）为（德雷）备受争议的纪实小说（英语：Roman à clef）开启了更为灿烂的一章，而民俗音乐传奇人物琼·贝兹则支持了她走上神坛”，补充道专辑“揭露了一个更脆弱的德雷”，比起前作，她在此作中不再像是那个“洛城的威胁”（LA menace）且“更加单纯的情绪化”。[18][19]

2019年8月30日，拉娜·德雷的第六张录音室专辑《诺曼去你的洛克威尔》发行当天，她宣布自己已经开始着手下一张专辑，[20]并透露作品标题为《White Hot Forever》（意为“永远白热”）。[21]大约9个月后，2020年5月25日，她在Instagram上发布了一连串影片，宣布标题改为《Chemtrails over the Country Club》（乡村俱乐部上的飞机云）。[22]专辑原计划在2020年9月5日发行，但后来透露专辑将延期发行，原因是2019冠状病毒病疫情导致黑胶制作延迟，[23][24]以及不确定是否要收录歌曲《Dealer》。[24][25][26]《Dealer》最终确定并未收录于专辑中。[27]

单曲《让我像女人一样爱你》发行近两月后，德雷在《吉米·法伦今夜秀》上用预录影片表演了单曲，这是她九年来的第一次电视演出。[32][33]几天后，德雷在杰克·安东诺夫的同志盟友联盟（Ally Coalition）才艺表演上表演了《平安夜》和《让我像女人一样爱你》。[34][35][36]不久后，德雷在2020年12月22日发布了专辑同名歌曲的预告影片，并在影片最后透露歌曲将于2021年1月11日发行且专辑将开放预订。[37]
