1956年匈牙利革命是匈牙利民眾反抗本國共產黨政權和蘇聯所強加制度的革命，也是歐洲二戰後，蘇聯統治面臨的首次重大挑戰。革命始於10月23日的學生抗議事件。在廣播電台，秘密警察向示威者開火造成多人死傷，革命於是爆發。匈牙利民眾推翻政府，提出政治訴求，武裝反抗蘇聯和秘密警察。為穩定局勢，納吉·伊姆雷出任新政府總理，宣佈退出華約，實行多黨制並預備選舉。10月底，蘇軍一度撤離。11月4日，蘇軍再次進攻布達佩斯，匈牙利民眾堅持抵抗，但最終被鎮壓。期間大量民眾死傷，20萬人流亡國外，眾多革命者及納吉等領導人被處決。
